Channel Tunnel Rail Link

We cannot ignore one of the greatest civil engineering achievements. The first phase of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link saw the construction of 46 miles of the UK's first true high-speed rail track between the tunnel and Fawkham Junction in north Kent. The project includes the 1 km Medway bridge and a 3 km tunnel under the North Downs. Delivered on time and on budget despite major flooding on the site during construction in 2000, the Channel Tunnel Rail Link bought a bit of pride back to the UK's battered rail engineering community following the tragedies of Hatfield and Potters Bar.
