Chelmsford hospital gets green light

Final approval has been given to the £143 million revamp of Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford.

The PFI scheme will include a new accident and emergency department, 335 beds and a number of operating theatres.

Construction is due to start at the end of the month and the hospital will be built by the Bouygues Consortium, the Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust’s private partner.

The extension at Broomfield, which is set to be completed in 2009, will mean the close of Chelmsford’s St John’s hospital.
