Chippies anger over 'levy'

CARPENTERS are accusing south London firm Marldon Design and Build of deducting training levy payments without permission.

One chippie said: 'They have been taking the 2.28 per cent out of our wages. When we found out they shouldn't, we were asked to sign a contract agreeing to the deduction. None of the lads are going to sign it and we want our money back that has been docked before.'

A Marldon spokesman declined to comment on the contract.

Companies must pay the levy to the Construction Industry Training Board but employees and firms earning less than £61,000 are exempt.
