Civil Engineering: Channel Tunnel

50 Golden Years

'MY CHOICE has to be the Channel Tunnel because it represents an incredible feat of tunnel and civil engineering.' Construction of the tunnel began in 1987 and in 1994 the dream of a link between Great Britain and mainland Europe became reality.

It consists of three tunnels, each more than 30 miles long, 24 of which are under sea. When the volume of rubble removed during construction was dumped on the coast it increased the size of Britain by 90 acres.
