Collapsed tunnel job held back

WORK ON the tunnel which collapsed on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link in east London is still at a standstill nearly three weeks after the incident.

Tunnelling work on one of the twin-bore tunnels stopped earlier this month when a 10 mdiameter crater appeared above it in Stratford.

Investigations into the cause of the collapse are still being carried out and are not expected to be wrapped up until next week at the earliest.

A CTRL spokeswoman said: 'We will know more by next week. Until we know the same incident won't happen again, tunnelling will not be starting again.'

The contract is due to finish in summer 2004.
