Concrete market set at £3.4bn

MATERIALS

UK SPENDING on concrete and concrete products rose to £3.4 billion last year, according to the latest trade survey.

The market rose by 4 per cent over the year, with a massive 17 per cent growth between 1998 and 2002, according to the report by MSI Marketing Research for Industry.

The report splits the overall market into sectors, including paving and flagstones, bricks and blocks, precast structural concrete and bagged cement.

Sales of ready mixed concrete represented over a third of the overall concrete and concrete products market in terms of value, with as much as 41 per cent share of the £3.4 billion sector.

But researchers found that volumes of concrete sold increased only marginally over the four-year review period and put the monetary hike down to producers managing to pass on the costs of the aggregates levy and landfill tax to customers.
