Costain enjoys upturn in fortunes

COSTAIN'S stock is soaring after the firm broke into the top 10 of the annual contractor's table for the first time.

The company was languishing in 26th place at the turn of the year, but it has shot up the annual table since then and an April contracts haul totalling £191 million lifts Costain up six places from last month and into the top 10.

The firm landed eight jobs last month including a share of a £311 million package on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link at St Pancras won in a consortium with Bachy, O'Rourke and Emcor Drake & Scull, and a £9.5 million health centre for Stonebridge Community Housing Trust.

Bouygues topped the monthly table after a £311 million Private Finance Initiative concession for the Home Office reached financial close and this took the French outfit into the top 40 for the first time.
