Deadly Eire

Fatalities in the Irish construction sector rose by more than a third last year, according to the country's Health and Safety Authority.

A total of 23 workers were killed on Irish sites in 2005, compared with 15 the previous year. Denis Farrell, deputy-general secretary of Irish construction union Batu, said: 'There are so many subcontractors on some sites that even they don't know who they are working for. The level of subcontracting off loads responsibility and liability from companies to the subcontractors themselves.'
