Developer hit by £16m fire writ

A Wal-Mart subsidiary is being sued for £16 million after a fire broke out at a Leicestershire warehouse depot just hours after the sprinkler system was switched off.

Tenant ING Real Estate claims Magna Park Management was responsible for the November 2005 fire at Magna Park logistics centre, Lutterworth.

In a writ filed at London’s Technology & Construction Court, ING claims MPM should have isolated the fault in the sprinkler system rather than turning it off entirely.

MPM’s employees Croydon firm Commercial Property Asset Management, Middlesex company Atlas Fire Engineering and Birmingham-based Young Contracting Company are also named on the writ.

Earlier this year distribution firm TNT put in a £15 million claim against MPM, claiming the fire sent thousands of items of clothing up in smoke.

TNT used the site as a distribution facility for discount fashion retailer Primark.
