Green activists in the USA have claimed that diesel emissions from construction equipment are responsible for a large number of premature deaths and acute illnesses in California.

The Union of Concerned Scientists compared air quality data with typical plant emissions and found that an hour's use of an average older excavator was equivalent to 1,800 km driven by a modern truck.
