Dodgy diggers caught at Dover on road to Bulgaria

POLICE at the Port of Dover have recovered four stolen diggers on their way to Bulgar ia.

The JCB 801 mini-excavators had been stolen from a dealer in Braintree, Essex, last month. They were discovered in a semi-trailer being driven by two Bulgarian men.

Port officials checked their ownership with The National Plant & Equipment Register and found that two of the serial numbers related to machines recently sold by JCB in Denmark and Italy.

A third serial number related to a digger recently sold by JCB in the UK that was still with the original owner, while the fourth number was bogus.

Register manager Tim Purbrick said: 'We directed the officers to the unique identification numbers and when we checked these numbers on our database we made direct matches with the four diggers stolen in Essex.' Two arrests were made and all four diggers have now been returned to JCB.
