Birse workers are clocking on at 4am for a £9 million sea defence scheme along Blackpool's promenade. The early starts enable the firm to work around high tides on the borough council job, which covers a 750 m-long stretch from the Pleasure Beach to the Sandcastle Leisure complex. Birse is also reclaiming part of the beach using sheet piles and 90,000 tonnes of infill materials and, inside this area, laying a 3,000 cu m concrete ramp to provide access.
