East London Galliford favoured to take £20m Tower Hamlets deal

GALLIFORD Hodgson is tipped to edge out Christiani & Nielsen on a £20 million housing and retail scheme in east London for developer St James.

The firm is understood to have gone back to the client with projected cost savings. An officialdecision on the project is expected in early May.

A total of five firms were invited to bid, but Carillion, Hunting Gate and MJ Gleeson declined to return bids.

The scheme has been designed by architect Broadway Malyan and features a seven-storey building designed around a court-yard, plus a piazza at Narrow Lane in Tower Hamlets.

The project's residential element comprises 260 one- and two-bedroom flats and 187 basement car parking spaces. The scheme also includes a ground floor of 836 sq m for retail purposes and landscaping work.

The London Borough of Tower Hamlets has approved a detailed planning application, subject to a final legal agreement.

The mechanical and electrical engineer on the job is Whitecode Design, Walsh & Associates are structural engineers and EC Harris is the employer's agent.
