EU rules are inconsistent

Sir, Further to the article 'Barrier lifter speeds roadworks' (News, August 10), I was under the impression that Continental Europe's Health & Safety laws were the same as in the UK.

Someone should have a word with the principal contractor as to how the telehandler in the picture was allowed on site onto a bridge parapet without edge protection.

Again it is one rule for the UK and one for everyone else.
