Ex-Mowlem bias fear

Rumblings of discontent surface as Carillion is said to favour its own for best jobs

ANGRY Mowlem staff claim they have been excluded from key jobs following the takeover by Carillion in February.

Disgruntled staff have published their own newsletter in response to a Carillion communication outlining its integration strategy.

Authors of the newsletter, which has been printed on Carillion-headed paper, ask their ex-Mowlem colleagues to 'spread the word' and added: 'Many Mowlem staff cannot reconcile the Carillion chief executive's statement that they bought Mowlem for its people and that there would be a fair selection process.' The newsletter claims Mowlem staff have been overlooked for jobs while their Carillion counterparts have been given preferential treatment. It claims 44 per cent of Mowlem staff 'were pessimistic or had no view on the future of the group'.

It says all director positions within the enlarged building division have been filled by Carillion staff, 'most' jobs in Mowlem's FM division will be readvertised and 'Carillion have nominated all directors for the rail and roads business to be Carillion staff even though the Mowlem team in the road sector has been more successful'.

It also alleges Carillion has skimped on paying out to Mowlem staff made redundant since the £313 million takeover.

The letter says: 'Carillion are giving the bare minimum severance entitlement to all those who have served Mowlem.

Many have been made redundant after 15-plus years' service and will get little more than the bare minimum.' It also attacks Carillion's due diligence process, which has seen the firm write down a further £90 million, and says: 'No action will be taken against the senior Carillion staff who undertook the due diligence.' A Carillion spokeswoman said: 'The newsletter is full of inaccuracies and misleading statements.

'It seems more of an individual complaint than being representative of a larger group of people.'
