Exclusive: Balfour continues academies domination as more winners revealed

Construction News can reveal that Clugston Construction, Interserve, Balfour Beatty and Bam Construct are the latest winners on the academies framework.

Clugston has been selected ahead of Bam Construct to build the £7.7 million Cleethorpes Academy for North East Lincolnshire Council with a new two-storey teaching block to be built, which will accommodate 19 new classrooms.

However Bam Construct has won a £9.4 million deal to build Plymouth’s Marine Academy.

Balfour Beatty continues to pick up work, winning the South Staffordshire Community Academy, while Interserve will build the Sutton High Academy in St Helens

Interserve had been chosen as preferred developer and began negotiations in June 2010 before BSF was scrapped.

In July 2010, just weeks after the coalition came to power, Education secretary Michael Gove put a halt on all academies procurement.

However in May 2011 he announced that 71 reworked schemes worth £800 million would go to market using a fast-track procurement system between June 2011 and December 2012.

In total, 31 academies of 71 academies to be built have now gone to preferred bidder status.

Balfour Beatty has picked up nine wins, while Bam Construct, Kier, Shepherd and Carillion all have 3.

Among those academies to come to market next are Maltby Academy in Rotherham where Bam Construct is bidding against Wates and Acton where Bam Construct is up against Kier.

Recent wins include Kier’s for The Gloucester Academy, and Carillion was named preferred bidder for the North Shore Health Academy at Stockton-on-Tees.
