Famous pier to be rebuilt

CONTRACTORS have been invited to rebuild Brighton's historic West Pier, which partially collapsed last December.

An advertisement for the £33 million project to overhaul the Grade I listed pier, which was built in the 1920s, was placed in the Official Journal last week.

The scheme also involves building a leisure complex on the shore to help finance the pier's restoration.

Expressions of interest must be sent to joint clients Brighton West Pier Trust and developer St Modwen by March 31.

Four firms will be asked to price the project with the winner starting work in spring 2004.
