Five bidders play Merry Hill

RIVAL firms are on tenterhooks over a £35 million mixed-use scheme in the West Midlands.

Mowlem, Laing, Bovis Lend Lease, Carillion and HBG are understood to be in the running for the project on a vacant site at client Chelsfield's vast Merry Hill development near Dudley.

The developer submitted a planning application to Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council in January for a residential block containing 98 apartments and two office buildings providing 11,500 sq m of rental space.

The application includes a footbridge over the canal running through the site, associated road works and landscaping.

One source close to the project said: 'We put the tenders in two weeks ago and we expect to hear shortly because Chelsfield is talking about being on site by May.' A contractor is due to be chosen by the end of February.
