Five Israelis die in Gaza crossing attack

Militants set off a large bomb as gunmen stormed an Israeli base at a vital Gaza crossing, killing five Israelis and three Palestinian attackers, defying efforts by newly-elected Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas to stop the bloodshed.
It was by far the biggest attack since Abbas won Sunday's election to succeed Yasser Arafat as head of the Palestinian Authority and defied his statements opposing Palestinian attacks against Israelis, which he has called a mistake.

It came only hours after a West Bank Hamas leader said the Islamic group might consider an end to attacks against Israel.
