Five sacked after water utility probe

CONTRACTORS working for Northumbrian Water have carried out internal investigations after five employees from the water utility were fired.

Supply chain partners carrying out repair and maintenance work across the network were ordered by Northumbrian Water to 'check for discrepancies' following the sackings.

Construction News understands the inquiry centred on allegations of improper dealings with the Northumbrian Water employees managing pipeline upgrades.

A source at one contractor said: 'We were asked to check what contact we had had with the individuals involved and report anything we could not account for.'

A spokesman for Northumbrian Water said the five workers had been fired after 'unacceptable behaviour' was uncovered.

He said: 'This was not in relation to contract awards or the tendering process. Our contract system is robust, transparent and financially audited.'

Police were not involved.
