Foster job a flamer as welding starts blaze

A WELDER set fire to rubber roofing insulation and sparked a massive blaze at a block of luxury f lats in Altrincham, Greater Manchester last week.

The man had been working on a metal staircase at the Budenberg Haus Projeckte in Woodfield Road when the fire started.

More than 40 firefighters were called out to tackle the flames, which damaged flats on the sixth and seventh floors of the £29 million development.

Property developer Urban Splash was using its own construction firm, Urban Splash Build, on the site. The firm is still waiting for reports into the incident from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue service and the Health and Safety Executive.

The project is the first to be designed by internationally renowned architect Foster and Partners in the UK outside London. The firm has previously worked on the British Museum and rebuilding the Reichstag in Berlin, Germany.
