Four chase £35 million residence

CONTRACTS BIRMINGHAM

FOUR firms are in contention for a £35 million residential scheme in Birmingham. Laing, HBG, Sir Robert McAlpine and Shepherd return first stage bids tomorrow (February 28) to Crosby Homes for its scheme called B5 Southside.

The job involves building 447 apartments and eight retail units on a site opposite the Birmingham Hippodrome in Bromsgrove Street. The development is expected to form the centrepiece of Birmingham's new Southside Quarter.

One bidder said: 'The job is a pretty normal development apart from the car park. There has to be room for a car park about the size of a B&Q store in the basement.'

Work is expected to start in the summer and will be completed in phases by 2005.
