Four seek university honours


BIRMINGHAM University has lined up four bidders for a £28 million student accommodation scheme.

Costain, Norwest Holst, Alfred McAlpine and Laing O'Rourke are the rivals seeking honours for the Mason Hall project on the university's main Edgbaston campus.

Initial bids for the scheme are due back today (Thursday).The university will select a contractor to work up detailed designs by the end of the month.

The scheme comprises building a seven-storey block with 850 ensuite bedrooms.Work on site is due to start in June 2006, with construction lasting 18 months.

Aedas is the project's architect.
