Four shoot for £30m mixed-sport stadium

FOUR teams are looking to net a £30 million stadium development in Doncaster.

Big hitters Sir Robert McAlpine, Laing O'Rourke and Mowlem are preparing bids, while Shepherd will also return documents as it looks to build a football stadium for the first time.

One estimator said: 'The tender for this one will cause a headache for all concerned over Christmas. It is highly sought after and nobody was expecting Shepherd to be in the mix.'

The successful team will build the new home for Doncaster Rovers football club, the town's rugby league team, Doncaster Belles ladies football club and the local athletics team.

The Lakeside Community Stadium project will include five-a-side football facilities, an athletics track, conference and banqueting facilities and a park.

The seating capacity for the stadium was originally intended to be 10,000 but that is now under review with the capacity likely to top 15,000.

Rovers' present Belle Vue ground is set to be transformed into a housing, leisure and business complex.

Tenders are due back with Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council on January 28. Construction will take 61 weeks.
