Fourfold increase in online child porn arrests

Arrests and convictions for internet child porn offences have more than quadrupled in just two years, it emerged today.
New figures showed 2,234 perverts were cautioned or charged with crimes in England and Wales in 2003, compared with 549 in 2001 - a rise of 307 per cent.

Children's charity NCH pointed out that 2003's figure was 64 times the 35 offences recorded in 1998, the year when the legal framework for child pornography crimes was established.

The charity, formerly known as National Children's Homes, said the increase highlighted an urgent need for the creation of a national centre to combat online paedophiles.
