Give the workers their due and ditch the bonus schemes

Sir, Over quite a few weeks I have been reading about developments on the Heathrow Terminal 5 project.

When I read about wages reaching £50,000 a year, I knew it would end in tears.

I have been in construction for many years and have been in a number of bonus schemes but I think it is an unfair way of paying people. There have long been arguments over this method.

I think the contractors on T5 got men by false pretences and I think they should be brought to book for it.

These men were promised £50,000 a year and it is the same old thing - the contractors have just discovered how much this will cost and have lost their bottle.

I think the unions have been weak on this project.

The unions should close the site down and start again with proper pay for the workers without unfair bonuses.
