Goddard pitches for super-union top slot

A SENIOR Amicus official has made an outspoken pitch for the leadership of the 'superunion' due to be formed by a merger with the T&G.

Graham Goddard, deputy general secretary of Amicus, told a meeting of union members he was backed by current general secretary Derek Simpson to lead the new union.

He said: 'Derek has decided to put me into the position of being the next general secretary of the union.

'The succession policy is well under way; it has been discussed at the highest level and it cannot possibly be stopped.'

He also pushed for Amicus officials to seize key roles following the merger, due to take place in January.

He said: 'We have to get our people in position so the T&G do not take control.'

The comments from Mr Goddard were transcribed and published on an unofficial Amicus website. Amicus declined to comment.

A union source said: 'This has been discussed at the top of the T&G and dismissed in all honesty. The consensus is that he has been a bit naïve.'
