Greenhouse gas targets 'no threat to profits'

ENVIRONMENTALISTS claim new European greenhouse gas targets will not hit the industry's profits.

Experts at the Government-supported environmental body the Carbon Trust said proposals to limit carbon dioxide emissions throughout the European Union would not damage the UK cement and construction industry.

A study on the effects of new carbon emission limits had claimed that UK cement manufacturers faced increased production costs and dwindling margins.

But Carbon Trust director of policy Michael Grubb said:

'This study shows conclusively that the UK cement and construction industries have little to fear from the emissions trading scheme.'
