Ground glass stiffens blocks

CONCRETE blocks made from recycled glass can perform better than those made solely from primary aggregate, according to Scottish materials firm Brand & Rae.

The firm has completed a six-month trial, sponsored by recycling body Wrap, to produce 75,000 concrete blocks using crushed recycled glass.

Even when all but 20 per cent of the natural aggregate was replaced by the glass, the blocks showed no reduction in performance or handling.

The firm claims it could potentially end up recycling as much as 65,000 tonnes of glass a year.
