Heijmans eyes north and Midlands

DUTCH contractor Heijmans wants to buy building contractors in the Midlands and northern England to bolster its UK subsidiary Leadbitter.

Heijmans is looking for contractors working on social housing, health and schools - areas that helped Leadbitter raise operating profits in the first half of 2006 to £2 million f rom £1.3 m illion a year ago.

Heijmans said: 'Acquisitions are being investigated in order to increase the geographical spread of UK activities.'

Abingdon-based Leadbitter also has offices in Bristol, Cardiff and Southampton.

The firm raised interim turnover £18 million to £85 million but the order book slipped to £129 million from £151 million this t ime last year.

Overall, Heijmans turned over £910 million in the first half, with £225 million coming from outside the Netherlands, including the UK, Belgium and Germany.
