Hewitt defends compromise smoking ban

Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt today defended the Cabinet's compromise smoking ban - though she conceded that her own preference was for a more comprehensive prohibition.
After days of semi-public wrangling, Ms Hewitt yesterday announced a partial ban on smoking in public places.

Private members' clubs and pubs that do not serve food will now be exempt under proposals which will be published in detail later today.
