Hit back at plant thieves

PLANT thief Stewart Dimech was jailed for 10 years last week for crushing a woman to death while trying to steal a truckful of mini excavators. His accomplice Lawrence Cawley was jailed for three years but the court heard that at the time of the tragedy he had been released early on licence from an 18-month sentence for stealing £500,000-worth of construction kit.

The pair are believed to be responsible for swiping more than £1 million-worth of equipment in north London and have been laughing at the law for years.

Plant theft has never really been taken seriously by the police or courts. Now a habitual thief has been allowed to swagger out of jail to continue his life of crime with tragic results.

Surely it is finally time to get tough with persistent thieves, as now it is not just our property at stake.
