Houses of straw plan

Wates has been asked to help build two bungalows in the West Midlands out of straw bales.
A planning application for the scheme in Walsall has gone to the local council and a decision is due early next month.

The project is the brainchild of Birmingham firm Zenith Development Partnership, set up by affordable housing groups Mercian and Trident Housing Association.

Zenith development director Chris Seeley said: 'Straw bale construction is not well known in this country but it's a well tested construction methodology around the world.

'It won't ever be a huge part of our programme but it will be a reasonable part.'
