THE Health and Safety Executive is piloting a new accident investigation selection process in north-west England to cut the number of unnecessary investigations it carries out.
HSE inspectors will step up preventative work rather than waste resources on routine investigations.
A new hard-line approach will see the HSE go straight to bosses if a company has a poor health and safety record.
An HSE spokeswoman said: 'Taking this approach is a better use of resources by going straight to source.'
All three-day reportable accidents will be excluded but the data will still be collected to be reviewed.
The spokeswoman said: 'Major injuries and fatalities will always be investigated.
'At the time of an accident the HSE can have a big impact in changing the working culture.'
Finger amputations will only be investigated if there is potential for the accident to be more serious.
Multiple fractures will be investigated if they are sustained in areas in which the HSE is trying to reduce accidents including workplace transport accidents, falls from height and crushings.
