with Odeon chain

TARMAC has taken a 10.7 million contract for a leisure and entertainment complex in the heart of Glasgow the first contract under a partnering agreement with Odeon Cinemas, which will see Tarmac working on other Odeon developments throughout the UK.

The fast-track project, at Springfield Quay, alongside the Clyde, is due for completion in only 30 weeks.

The project, which will create up to 400 construction jobs, will feature a 12-screen cinema seating 2,500 people, a bingo hall seating 2,200 people, restaurants and other leisure facilities.

Giant Sainsburys

TENDERS to build a 40 million retail centre in the Midlands will go out in August.

J Sainsbury Developments, the property arm of food giant Sainsburys, has teamed up with Castle City Estates to apply for permission to build 33,700 sq m of retail shopping space at Telford. A massive 7,500 sq m Sainsburys store is planned.

A spokesman for the developers said a main contractor would be sought in August, with work on the site expected to begin in autumn.

The developers are negotiating to buy the land from the Commission for the New Towns, and have applied to Wrekin District Council for planning permission.

Widows peak

DEMOLITION work is due to start around May or June for the start of a 10 million, 10,220 sq m office development in the City of London.

Scottish Widows has the planning all-clear for the eightstorey complex, to be built at 140 Aldersgate Street, on the site formerly occupied by the London Salvage Corporation.

A start on site for the new building will depend on pre-letting it; but development manager Jones Lang Wootton hopes that a deal will be concluded to allow work to begin this autumn.
