Germany to lose 90,000 building jobs
GERMAN construction firms expect to shed 90,000 jobs this year because of the recession in the former West Germany and threat of a downturn in the former East Germany. The construction industry association in Germany also warns that up to 6,000 firms could go bust.
SWEDISH firm L Fritz Technology has opened offices in Barrow-in-Furness and Wolverhampton. It will provide experience in combustion technology and thermal energy.
FOSTER Wheeler has won a 22,000 engineering professional development award from the Royal Academy of Engineering.
Hall & Watts buyout
HALL and Watts (Optronic), the largest UK distributor of surveying equipment has been acquired in a 2 million manage- ment buyout from the Hall and Watts Group.
CUMMINS Engine Company is closing its UK engine plant in Lanarkshire, axing 700 jobs. The supply of heavy-duty engines for European, Middle Eastern and African markets will be consolidated with mid-range engines at its Darlington plant.
