KITCHEN supplier Magnet is branching out into the exterior decking market. The new decking range includes both softwood and hardwood grooved 2.4 m boards and 500 mm sq tiles. Also included in the range are handrails, balustrades, hardware and fixings. Magnet says the decking range is available from trade stores around the country.

Wool beam system

BRITISH Gypsum’s Glasroc range of steelwork encasement systems has been extended to incorporate a mineral wool beam encasement system. The new development, achieved in collaboration with mineral wool producer Isover Saint-Gobain, is called Glasroc Fireprotect. It is said to be easy to cut with a sharp knife, and is fast and economical to fix. A complete range of thicknesses is available offering up to four hours’ protection.

Concrete problems

CIRIA has published Action in the Case of Nonconformity of Concrete Structures. This book aims to help those involved in the construction process to reach pragmatic cost-effective solutions when confronted with non-conforming concrete structures. The book focuses on issues including cover, inherent quality, cracking, surface finish, honeycombing and surface damage. The book costs 40 for CIRIA members; 80 for non-members.

Wood veneer

MANUFACTURER Building Additions has launched a range of fine wood veneer folding partitions. The natural warmth and feel of the hardwood finish makes the new partitions especially suitable for prestige offices, clubs and community centres, says Building Additions. There are three types available: the Original; a glazed version called the Crystal; and the Acoustic Special, which has a sound-reducing rating of Rw33dB.

Shrinkable tubing

PMG HAS introduced Plastronic Heat Shrinkable Tubing, a product designed to protect runs of cable and wires through buildings. The tubing helps protect cable runs from abrasion, high continuous operating temperatures and other factors likely to cause damage. The cables are run through the pipe, which is then shrunk around them by applying heat from a hot-air gun.

Field station

SURVEY Supplies is to launch a new Nikon field station called the DTM- 801. It will be available in three different models, replacing the current DTM-800 Series at the top of the Nikon range. It has an accuracy of 2+2ppm, a faster distance measurement of 1.2 secs for precise measurement and 0.5 secs for tracking, and a longer battery life than its predecessor.

Steel stud fastener

QBM Distributors has introduced a new type of fastener, which it says allows faster, neater stitching of lightweight steel studs. The SL4F fastener has a flat square head form, which eliminates the gaps between board and frame caused when using hexagon headed screws. The fixing also features an anti-stripping design which QBM says will ensure the positive clamping of the two fixed metal parts.

Loose nut signal

SAFETY Link, from Rema Tip Top UK, is a tell-tale device designed to prevent the loosening of wheel nuts on heavy goods vehicles and give the driver a clear visual warning when a nut has worked loose. The device allows the nut to rotate through 7 degrees before stopping further movement. This movement is clearly visible and tells the driver that the nut needs re-torqueing.

Movement sensor

FRENCH firm Sensorex has developed a servo angle sensor with infra-red optical sensing, which is suitable for monitoring movement in structures such as buildings, bridges and large machines. The SX 41900 can be used for levelling machines and for monitoring the angular movement of plant such as cranes. The device is available in the UK from Powertronic Sensors.

Remote valve

WEBTEC has developed an FDM remote-control flow divider, which allows the priority flow to a hydraulic motor to be controlled at a distance of up to 40 m. The new valve uses a low-voltage motor with microprocessor control to regulate the priority port, while a bypass port can be used to run a secondary circuit.

Turbocharger aid

TURBO-GUARD is a new add-on lubrication system from Agriemach designed to solve the problem of turbocharger failure caused by oil starvation. The system anticipates oil starvation and holds a supply of oil in reserve to be fed to the bearings at exactly the right moment (usually when starting or stopping the engine). Agriemach says that, once installed, the system requires no maintenance.
