Lighting design

Gewiss has launched a free CD lighting design package to helpdesigners and specifiers visualise the effect of proposed lighting schemes. Prolite 2000 can be used when designing interior, exterior and street lighting incorporating Gewiss products. As well as providing technical data, Prolite 200 has a built-in tutorial on-line help and results can be displayed in four different modes: Isolux (viewable from any angle to see shadow patterns), trimension (viewable from four angles), value and spot.

Makeover plan

Marketing consultancy Smye Holland Associates has launched a 'marketing makeover' package. For a fixed fee of £999 plus VAT, the firm will work with a company'ssenior management to develop a marketing plan aimed at meeting corporate sales and profit growth targets. Smye Holland says it specialises in advising construction firms.

Esab says its new Caddy LHQ150 portable welding inverter uses the latest solid state electronics to provide excellent welding results even from novice welders. Automatic hot start, arc force and anti-stick functions produce easy starts, smooth characteristics and the ability to weld with most general purpose electrodes up to 4 mm in diameter.

Cordless trim saw

Wolseley Centers now stocks a new 18V cordless trim saw which comes with a free carrying case. The 3,000 rev/min Robust trim saw is fitted with a bevel cut scale making it suitable for skirting and architrave trims, floor boards and panels. It has a safety lock on/off switch and sawdust outlet for connection to a vacuum extractor.

Fluorescent stand

SES Southern has introduced a new portable fluorescent lighting system called the Porta-Flory. The new system comes complete with a 2 x 18W fully enclosed polycarbonate fluorescent fitting secured to a strong, powder- coated tubular steel stand. The lighting stand is ideal for working in confined spaces, says SES. It can be fitted with either a 16 amp 110 V or 16 amp 240 V panel socket.

Integral blinds

Hansen Glass says it can now incorporate blinds into its Thermospan structural glazed systems. Called ThermoScreen, the blinds can be manipulated electronically or manually within the narrow cavities of normal-sized insulating glass units and standard curtain walling framing systems. ThermoScreen can be installed in cavities of 18 mm, 20 mm and 27 mm.

Remote monitor

Triteq has produced a monitoring unit designed especially to provide security for workers operating alone in remote areas. Triteq says the new system is ideal for installations such as electricity substations, mobile phone base stations and portable generators. The remote monitoring unit features a clocking-in system which enables workers to log their arrival on-site at the push of a button. If the button is not pressed within a pre-programmed time, the unit transmits an alarm to head office.

Hardwood coating

TRADA Technology has produced a data sheet entitled Exterior Coatings on Alternative Hardwoods, produced in recognition of the growing number of replacement timbers being introduced as substitutes for endangered tropical hardwoods such as teak and mahogany. The datasheet is based on the results of a three-year research project and considers the suitability of various coatings on 17 lesser-known hardwoods. The document costs £5.

JCT forms on disk

The Joint Contracts Tribunal and RIBA Publications have launched JCT Forms on Disk, a software package that offers standard forms of building contract on CD-Rom. The product is a significant development in the preparation of JCT construction contracts, says RIBA Publications. It allows users to customise the forms to suit individual client requirements while retaining the Standard Form.

Resin flooring

Flooring trade body FeRFA has published a new guide to specifying resin flooring. The 117-page Resin Flooring Industry Handbook includes a guide to the specification and application of synthetic resin flooring. FeRFA says the book is to form the basis of a proposed British Standard for in-situ floor-ing. It deals with: classification,design, substrate preparation, application, inspection and testing. It is available free of charge.

Modern classic

Specialist publisher Donhead Publishing has published a new edition of the 'classic' work by W Verrall, The Modern Plasterer. The original two- volume book is now bound in a single volume and offers an exhaustive examination of the plasterer's trade. Landfill review

The Environmental Services Association Research Trust has published its first report: Sustainable Landfill in the UK: a Review of Current Knowledge and Outstanding Research and Development. The publication, produced in partnership with the Norlands Foundations, says sustainable landfill can only be achieved if each generation manages its waste to final storage quality.

Panel boards

F&G Installation Switchgear's new Concept 4 panel boards are ASTA certified and tested to 35 kAmps. They are available in two ratings: 400 amps and 800 amps and come with a choice of 6, 12, or 18 outgoing ways, though connecting links are available that allow two units to be joined together to form larger configurations. The boards are designed to be used with F&G's circuit breakers to protect electrical installations from overload.

Trenchless system

Utility contractor Subterra now offers the German Trolining trenchless sewer renovation system to clients in the UK and Eire. This sewer-lining system consists ofa uniform ring of high-strength grout surrounded on its inside and outside diameters with two studded high-density polyethylene (HDPE) liners. The HDPE and grout 'sandwich' forms a continuous rigid liner which follows the contours of the host sewer pipe.

Rescue ladder

The Dover rescue and working platform is designed to allow rescuers to reach workers suspended by their harnesses following anaccidental fall from a height. The ladder can be carried to the position where required, lowered down to the casualty and fixed in position to the top flange. The casualty can then either climb the ladder or, if they are injured, a rescuer can climb down to administer first aid.

CO sensor/alarm

BRK has launched a carbon mono-xide alarm, the CO3000BNEC. Itis powered by a 9 V battery and is said to be easy to install. The sen- sor responds to both concentration of gas and duration of exposure. Dangerous levels of CO trigger a piercing 85dB audible alarm accompanied by a red flash-ing LED. The CO3000BNEC is fitted with a green power-on indicator and a yellow warning light gives one month's notice for battery replacement.
