Infra-red security key to crack down on tool theft

GERMAN power tool specialist Metabo has brought high-tech security to the small tool sector with a security system that acts as an immobiliser for its electric drills.

The Code! system consists of an electronic key into which the user programs a three-digit code. When the key is pointed at the tool, a press of a button disables the machine's functions.

The system can be configured to disable either one tool or a range, allowing sites and hirers to control who uses the equipment, Metabo says.

The Code! key features an LED indicator to show whether the tool is disabled.
