'Join heads to attract operators'

HIRERS and manufacturers need to get together with trainers to work out how to provide ongoing operator training if the industry is to beat the skills shortage, according to Finning sales director, Alex Hillman.

Mr Hillman called for more co-operation in the industry to ensure that younger operators stay in the industry, as the age profile of operators continues to rise. 'We need to attract people, reward them and give them a safe environment to work in, ' he said.

The Caterpillar dealer has doubled the expected sales of its new backhoe range largely due to the machines' pilot controls, which are more familiar to excavator operators.

'This has made the machines accessible to a broader range of people, ' added Mr Hillman.
