Kent Blue Circle seeks cement bids

BLUE Circle is drawing up a list of potential bidders for a £180 million replacement cement works in Kent.

The project, known as Medway Works, will be going out to selective tender in 1999 with a

contractor chosen later in the year.

The project, to replace the Northfleet Works, is expected to be finalised in 2001, but this

depends on the outcome of the planning application which the firm has lodged with Kent County Council.

Blue Circle spokesman Tony Eyde said: 'We expect this to be called in by the Secretary of State for the Environment and don't know how long the inquiry will take.

'We won't know until the application period is completed and that takes 16 weeks.'

Blue Circle said that the new works would reduce gas and particle emissions through the incorporation of modern technology.
