Levy dodgers pay back £500,000

INVESTIGATORS have clawed back more than £500,000 from levy dodgers for the Construction

Industry Training Board.

The operation began in January and involved investigators carrying out checks on UK contractors.

Under the initiative, the board has also set up an enquiry system which allows registered employers to find out over the phone whether named competitors are registered levy payers. The industry's train-

ing provider plans to continue the operation in 1998.

It is targeting four categories for visits from its team of verifiers. They are firms: which do not complete a levy return when asked; which return

details that are significantly different from previous years; whose number of employees does not match up with the declared payroll; and where the information given in the levy return does not tally with grant claims.
