Lock in your plant, security boss urges

PLANT

SECURITY specialists have urged plant dealers and owners to make their yards more secure following a spate of thefts.

Tim Purbrick, managing director of theft investigator TER, warned that JCB, Caterpillar, Manitou, John Deere, New Holland and Case machines are being targeted for shipping to Poland, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria.

He urged dealers to protect their property by installing good security lighting, putting machines in locked stores and blocking access routes.

He said: 'The thieves use angle grinders to cut through dealers' gates and low loaders, curtain-siders or bulkier trailers to remove machines directly to a port or holding area.

'Machine identities are often altered to show non-stolen UK identities. Criminals are stealing the serial number plate and engine management system with the number embedded in it as well as engine and axle numbers.'
