Locking up asylum seekers is unjust - Amnesty

Britain's policy of locking up asylum seekers causes 'untold suffering' and is often unnecessary and unjust, human rights group Amnesty said today.
Many asylum seekers were detained in jail-like conditions even though they had not shown any signs of attempting to abscond.

The charity published new figures which estimated that 27,000 people who had sought asylum were detained at some stage during 2003, with 25,000 detained the following year.
