MCG skills card total drops off

THE NUMBER of Major Contractors Group staff holding the CSCS skills card has fallen for the first time after two years of growth.

MCG cardholders fell 4.5 per cent from 33,651 to 32,173 between September and December 2004. The figures come from scheme administrator CITB-ConstructionSkills under the Freedom of Information Act Over the two years from 2002 numbers more than doubled, from 15,223 to a peak of 33,651 last September, before a downturn in the last quarter of 2004.

The statistics also reveal that 34,182 employees of MCG companies had passed the health and safety test necessary to attain the card.

But CITB-ConstructionSkills prevented a comparison of how MCG companies perform by hiding their identities in the data supplied, claiming commercial confidentiality.
