Merseytram scheme axed

THE GOVERNMENT has axed the £300 million Merseytram contract won by Laing O'Rourke in March.

Transpor t m in ister Derek Twigg pulled the plug on Tues-day after failing to gain guarantees from Merseyside councils and Merseytram that they would cover cost overruns.

Mr Twigg said: 'We cannot be confident that there will be no further requests for funding and we have decided that the scheme should not proceed.' A Merseytravel spokesman said: 'We are studying the state ment and considering our options but can not comment before a meeting of the Passenger Transport Authority.'
