Metrolink row

MPs have criticised the 'epic delays' to the £520 million extension of the Manchester Metrolink in the House of Commons. Labour MP Paul Bowers called on transport secretary Alistair Darling to bring down costs by allowing the public sector to take on more of the risk. The Government put plans to build three new lines on hold last December after costs rose to nearly £900 million.

Construction is unlikely to begin before 2007.
