Mooring plans could boost flood risk

The Green Party MEP Caroline Lucas has entered into a planning row over proposals to develop riverside moorings near Maidstone.
She has written to the planning inspector to urge him to reject the plans to provide berths for 30 boats and a car park at Fant, and has argued that the proposals would undermine flood protection and cause serious environmental damage.

She said: 'The existing river bank plays an important role in terms of flood protection. An urbanised development would undermine this role, as well as create new potential risks to public safety should flooding occur in the area...In short, this development is completely inappropriate for this site. It would detract from the character of the area and breach several environmental and planning policies.'
