New Morrison gets BREEAM excellent

Morrisons’ store at Kidderminster, in Worcestershire is the first retail development in the UK to be awarded a BREEAM excellent rating under the 2006 guidelines.

The supermarket, which was built on a brownfield site, has combine heat and power systems, a range of energy efficient refrigeration, water heating using heat from refrigeration equipment, solar panels and water saving methods.

Morrisons’ development director Chris Evenson said: “We have taken into account everything from energy management and insulation, to building products, construction methods and new cycle ways and care of the local otter colony.”

Other retail buildings have achieved an excellent rating from using the environmental building organisations assessment method but under the 2003 regulations rather than the 2006 criteria.
