Newport closes PFI school deal

Newport City Council and Vinci Investments have reached financial close on a £16.5 million PFI school deal - the third Welsh school PFI project to close.

The DBFO contract includes the development of a new school at Glebelands that will replace the Durham Road primary school and Rockfield nursery.

It will merge a junior school, an infant school and a nursery into one site that will have a capacity for 700 pupils. The school will be a three-form entry school.

Construction work will start immediately and will last for 18 months, and is due to open by December 2010.

There is an element of infrastructure ground work that needs to be completed before construction work can start on the new school.

The contractor is Norwest Holst and Crispin Borst will carry out FM services throughout the 25-year concession period.
